Fresh from the success of “The Art of Engagement: Fund Raising Communications Workshop”, Venture capped off its 25th anniversary back-to-back workshop series with a high-impact session on “Volunteer Management” held on May 23, 2025.

This one-day workshop served as a strategic continuation of our learning journey—shifting the focus from crafting messages that inspire giving to mobilizing the people who bring those messages to life by giving off their talent and time: volunteers.

By linking communication with volunteer engagement, the workshop helped participants understand how clear, compelling messages can help attract the right people, inspire deeper commitment, and build long-term relationships

“Volunteers are just as crucial as our donors.” Ms. Vina, workshop participant.

The primary goal of the workshop was to help participants maximize their human resources by introducing proven strategies for recruiting, engaging, and retaining volunteers. It also provided practical tools and real-world examples to support the development of more sustainable and impactful volunteer programs.

The day began with a quick overview from our Executive Director, Ms. Pinky N. Medina, on the fundamentals of fund raising, ensuring that all attendees shared a common understanding of its core principles.

She then highlighted the different ways having volunteers can enrich an organization and emphasized the need of putting policies, systems, and processes in place to demonstrate institutional commitment  to engaging volunteers.

Following Ms. Pinky’s discussion,  our Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Kiel S. Fernandez, then delivered a comprehensive discussion on the key steps in creating a volunteer program—from planning to evaluation. She also highlighted the strategies on how to recruit, onboard, engage and retain volunteers.

“My AHA moment came when I learned how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used to effectively engage volunteers within the organization.”

- Ms. Joy

“(I learned) how to effectively handle volunteers and how to make it (the volunteer experience) memorable for them.” -Ms. Em

Ms. Kiel also shared how to navigate the common challenges in managing volunteers.  A bonus session tackled a topic many organizations are eager to explore: corporate volunteer engagement. She shared actionable strategies for building relationships with companies and designing meaningful volunteer experiences that deliver value to both sides.

I also found the insights on how to handle difficult volunteers—and the proper and respectful ways to terminate volunteer engagement—especially helpful and practical.”

-Ms. Angel

Once again, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the organizations that actively participated in the workshop. Your involvement made the session more meaningful and brought diverse, valuable perspectives to the table.

If you missed this round, don’t worry—we’re just getting started. Venture continues to offer customized workshops that meet the evolving needs of non-profits and development professionals.
