Following the success of the Basic Course on Fund Raising #77 last September 16 to 18, 2025, Venture wrapped up its September back-to-back learning workshops with an insightful session on “The Science of Earned Income” held on September 19, 2025, at Prestige Tower, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The workshop highlighted earned income - the third source of nonprofit funding - and explored how participants can build sustainable revenue streams while staying true to the mission of their organizations.

To set the learning momentum, the day began with our Executive Director, Ms. Pinky Medina, giving participants a quick refresher on the fundamentals of fund raising to ensure everyone shared a solid grounding in its core principles.

Building on this, she introduced the essentials of earned income - explaining what it is, why it is a critical component of nonprofit sustainability, and how it can complement traditional funding sources like grants and donations.

Ms. Medina also outlined the practical aspects for establishing earned income initiatives, from navigating legal and regulatory considerations to identifying the skills, roles, and organizational capacities needed to implement and manage these strategies successfully.

“Nonprofits' processes are very scientific, and business skills are as important in NGOs/NPOs as they are in the corporate world.”

- Ms. Jen

In the afternoon, our Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Kiel Fernandez, led participants through the process of designing and planning effective earned income strategies. She also walked attendees through the essentials of costing computations, showing how nonprofits can price products and services sustainably while maintaining mission alignment.

Ms. Fernandez also highlighted the importance of exceptional customer care and provided tips on how to engage and retain clients or beneficiaries in ways that reinforce organizational credibility and trust.

Drawing from a rich selection of case studies from Philippine nonprofits, she also illustrated real-world successes and challenges, encouraging participants to reflect on how similar approaches could be adapted to their own organizations.

To enrich the discussion, the workshop also welcomed guest speaker Mr. William Barry H. Camique, former Retail Operations (Program) Manager of Caritas Manila’s Segunda Mana, one of the country’s leading social enterprises.

He shared the inspiring story of how the program has advanced its mission, while also addressing the difficulties faced in sustaining an enterprise. His session gave participants a valuable, real-world perspective on balancing social impact with financial sustainability.

By combining theory with concrete examples, the workshop empowered participants with both the knowledge and confidence to begin implementing earned income initiatives that support long-term sustainability.

“Building earned income requires business skills, market analysis, and systems that nonprofits must deliberately strengthen.

Relying solely on grants and donations makes nonprofits vulnerable, but earned income streams provide stability and long-term resilience.”

- Ms. Nith

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizations that joined us for this meaningful session—their active participation brought diverse and valuable perspectives to the table.
